His name appears in early manhood as town clerk, about the time of the Revolution and for some years after, and then as supervisor. Like his father and his grandfather, he was in dress and manner a strict member of the Society of Friends, of high character and fine personal appearance, nearly six feet in height, and bearing himself with grace and dignity. The only portrait of him is here copied from a pencil sketch, said to have been a good likeness at the time, made when he was eighty years old, in 1841, by his

Silas, I)om 1789, died at Rochester, 1854 ; marrie<i, 1815, Sarah Mott. born 1791, died 1872, daughter of Adam and .-Vnnie Mott, and had : First -- Thomas Clapp, of whom further mention is made in our account of Yonkers, l>orn 1819 ; married, 1850, Jane K. Bashford, borii 1829, daughter of John and Esther A. (Guion) Bashford, of Yonkers.
