croton.news is an independent, AI-assisted civic information project for Croton-on-Hudson, New York. We help residents follow local government by making public records easier to find, understand and verify.

Our purpose

Meetings, budgets and local laws affect daily life, but following the record takes time. We turn recordings, official minutes and documents into readable coverage, alongside searchable sources and data tools. Our work adds to the information available from local publications, community organizations and government itself.

How the reporting is made

AI assists with transcription, document processing, drafting and review. Stories draw on the sources identified with them: a recording and transcript, official minutes, filed documents, historical records or public datasets. An agenda describes proposed business; it does not establish that a decision was made.

Our current publication process combines source review with automated checks for issues such as unsupported quotations, names, amounts and attributions. These checks can miss errors. A transcript match does not by itself prove that the words were transcribed correctly or assigned to the right speaker. Automated review is not a substitute for human editorial judgment.

Matthew Broudy is the publisher and responsible editor. He sets the standards, reviews work and handles corrections. This does not mean every article has received a line-by-line human review. How we work explains the different types of coverage and their limits.

What we cover

Coverage includes the Board of Trustees, Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Croton-Harmon Board of Education, and village advisory bodies, including conservation, sustainability, recreation, IDEA, police, bicycle and pedestrian, waterfront, and fire committees. Availability varies by body, meeting and source.

A meeting record, a captured document, a searchable transcript and a reviewed article are different stages. Not every meeting has all four. Missing recordings, unpublished minutes, extraction problems and unresolved source conflicts can delay coverage. Older articles may predate the current checks; their presence in the archive does not establish that they have been re-reviewed.

The archive currently lists 378 meeting records and 126 transcripts across 29 committee categories. These are archive counts, not measures of complete coverage or independent verification. Data pages identify the periods their sources cover; a recently updated page may contain historical data.

Who is responsible

The site is operated by Matthew Broudy, a Croton-on-Hudson resident and technologist. It is independent of the Village government and political parties. The publisher is accountable for the work published here.

Corrections

We investigate reports of errors and correct or clarify coverage when warranted. Substantive corrections to older reporting are noted on the affected page and in our public corrections log. Minor copy edits may not have a separate entry. Contact us with a page link and the issue you found; supporting records are helpful but are not required to raise a concern.
