There were born all of his children, four sons and three daughters, of whom Philip, the distinguished General Philip Van Cortlandt of the Revolutionary army, was the eldest. Those were palmy days for the old manor house. Cadwallader Golden, writing to his wife in 1753, said: "'I have had a very pleasant ride from Pishkill to Van Cortlandt, where I lodged, passing easily through the mountains. Young Pierre ami his charming wife keep up the hospitality of the house equal to his late father.'' His time was largely devoted to caring for the interests of the numerous Van Cortlandt heirs in connection with the manor lands -- a very responsible business, involving many delicate matters. He died in the manor house on the 1st of May, 1S14, being aged more than ninetythree years. He lies buried in the cemetery of the Van Cortlandts. The following is the inscription on his tomb: " Mark the perfect man and behold the upright ; for the end of that man is peace."
