Your polite invitation in behalf of the Common Council of the city of New York, bearing date the 26th day of September, and post marked, New York, October 2d, did not come to hand till this morning. I shall call a special meeting of the Board this afternoon, and shall lay your

nication before them.

I regret that it had not come to hand in due course, as it has been the source of much

surprise that our little village should have been so far overlooked, as there is none who more interest in participating in celebrating the completion of a work that has not its feel equal in this or any other country. I am, very respectfully.
