Interview with Schureman, John
[margin: Moses Clark.] [margin: PARIS] 25. Moses Clark: The British army in 1776, encamped on both sides of the New Rochelle and White Plains road on Coutant's Ridge and Frederick Devoe's (Tom Gaines') farm. The Head quarters of the British Generals Howe and Clinton were at James Pugsleys and Devoe's.
[margin: John Schureman.] John Schureman: The British army, or part of them, in ad= -vancing to White Plains in 1776, passed my house, and so got upon the Maron= -eck and White Plains road. My father was killed by a party (supposed to be British refugees) who were plundering his cattle. Shabe Merritt was bold and reckless. He married a Secor of New Rochelle. In riding upon the road once he was fired upon by a party of five or six, who missed him. Brandishing [page break] [margin: John Schureman contd.] his sword he cried out: "Come on! Come on!" Presently afterwards he returned with his wife on horseback on the same route where he was fired upon.
Jesse Mullineux: When the armed vessel in East Chester creek was taken, the Americans took possession of a sloop which had gone up the creek for hay. In the sloop they approached the British vessel. Being hailed, they gave a friendly answer, approached near and then boarded. There were but few men on board the British vessel, most of the crew being below. They then took both vessels to Connecticut. The hay boat in which they approached was known to the British and had been allowed to go up and down the creek [margin: * This is a very loose account of the capture of the British armed sloop "The Tartar" (version of the Tory ways 12) given by Lockwood and part in some of the other M.S. diff. in the Church's Books.
