Moses Clark: “The British army in 1776, encamped on both sides of the New Rochelle and White Plains road on Coutant’s Ridge and Fredrick Devoe’s (Tom Paine’s) farm. The headquarters of the British Generals (Howe and Clinton) were at James Pugsleys and Devoe’s.”
