A Mrs. Palmer discusses her husband’s role in the Battle of Stony Point on July 16, 1779. An American force led by Brigadier General Anthony Wayne successfully assaulted a British outpost in present-day Rockland County. Mrs. Palmer recounts a ruse used by the American forces to examine the British defenses the day before the battle.

Mrs Palmer. Novr. 1st. Mrs. Palmer: My husband was one of twelve selected from his regiment to form Wayne’s forlorn hope at Stoney Point. The day before the assault, a spy was sent in to scan the weak points of the fort &c. in the disguise of a country man selling eggs and chickens.
