Paulding, John

John M. McDonald interview — 1848-11-18

From the Westchester County Historical Society catalog:
John Paulding (1794-1850) was apparently a first cousin of John Paulding (1758-1818), one of the three men who captured British Major John André. The interviewee’s father, Peter, was a brother of the captor’s father, Joseph. He relates information regarding the capture of André that he heard from his mother, Jane Fowler (1765-1849).

November 18th. John Paulding. My mother an aged woman who always lived in this vicinity says she has always heard that Major Andre was taken south of the brook by the three who were posted at the time on the west side of the road – that he watered his horse at the brook, Williams being on guard and Van Wart and Paulding playing cards, and that he was searched and examined on the east side of the road, &c.
