John M. McDonald interview — 1848

From the Westchester County Historical Society catalog:
Martin Smith (1786-1860) was a nephew of Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of British Major John André. He describes the location where André was captured in 1780. Smith notes that this information came from a Mr. Wildey, who owned the land on both sides of the Albany Post Road where the incident took place.

Martin Smith of Tarrytown: “With respect to Major André’s capture, I have my information from old Mr. Wildey who owned the ground where it occurred on both sides of the road &c. The capture was made south of André’s brook and west of the road, and they took him across for examination.
