Mrs. Toffy may be Esther Toffey (1763-1853), a resident of New Rochelle. Here, she tells John Macdonald that the American whaleboat man Frederick “Fade” Donaldson hanged her brother-in-law, Mr. Rhinelander, “on an apple tree to get his money!”
