This list of interviewees is intended to give brief information regarding each of the people whom John Macdonald interviewed between 1844 and 1851. In some cases, no information could be found regarding the interviewee, particularly those whose first names were not provided by Macdonald.

Much of the vital information for the interviewees was obtained through cemetery and tombstone records. The entries that contain a reference to “WCHS Book” refer to the tombstone transcription books in the library of the Westchester County Historical Society for cemeteries in Westchester County. Tombstone records for interviewees buried in Fairfield County, Connecticut, were found via Findagrave.com.

ACKER, Benjamin

Benjamin in Acker is listed as an 87-year-old resident of the Town of Ossining, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Old Dutch Burying Ground in Sleepy Hollow, New York, indicates that he died on November 25, 1851, aged 88 years, 3 months, and 6 days (WCHS Book 25A, p.130).

ALLEN, Samuel

Samuel Allen is listed as a 56-year-old farmer in the Town of New Castle, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. A petition for probate for Samuel Allen or New Castle was filed with the Westchester County Surrogate’s Court on November 10, 1880 (Westchester County Wills Liber 91, p.391).

ANDERSON, Jeremiah

Jeremiah Anderson was a son of William Anderson and Elizabeth Underhill. He is listed as a 67-year-old farmer in the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census.

ARCHER, Samuel

Samuel Archer was the brother of interviewees William Archer and Elizabeth Tuttle. He is listed as a 54-year-old farmer in the Town of West Farms, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. According to historian Harry C.W. Melick, Samuel was born on August 5, 1795, and died on July 19, 1870 (Harry C.W. Melick, “Descendants of John Archer of Fordham,” 1951, Typescript in WCHS Library, p.84).

ARCHER, William

William Archer was the brother of interviewees Samuel Archer and Elizabeth Tuttle. He is listed as a 64-year-old farmer in the Town of West Farms, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. According to historian Harry C.W. Melick, William was born on June 1, 1785, and died on January 27, 1866 (Harry C.W. Melick, “Descendants of John Archer of Fordham,” 1951, Typescript in WCHS Library, p.84).

BARKER, William

John Macdonald indicated that William Barker was 87 years old at the time of his interview on October 20, 1850. He is listed as an 86-year-old farmer in the Town of White Plains, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the White Plains Rural Cemetery in White Plains indicates that he was born on September 10, 1764, and died on March 26, 1859 (WCHS Book #39, p.15).

BATES, Jonathan

Jonathan Bates is listed as a 77-year-old farmer in the Town of Darien, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Old Darien Cemetery in Darien indicates that he died on October 31, 1854, aged 82 years. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11920807/jonathan-bates

BATTIN, John

Jonathan Bates is actually John Battin, who is listed as a 99-year-old native of England and a resident of the 3rd Ward of New York City in the 1850 United States Census. Battin told John Macdonald that he was in his 98th year at the time of his interview on October 23, 1849. He served in the 17th Light Dragoons of the British army during the Revolutionary War but remained in New York after the end of the conflict. He died on June 29, 1852. According to historian Benson Lossing, Battin was aged “one hundred years and four months” at the time of his death and was “probably… the last living relic of the British army in America.” See Benson J. BAYLES, Nathaniel

Although John Macdonald indicated that Nathaniel’s surname was Baylies, it was actually spelled Bayles. He indicates that he drew up the will of Isaac Van Wart, one of the three captors of British Major John André. He is listed as a 58-year-old resident of the Town of Greenburgh, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in First Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in New Rochelle indicates that he died on December 6, 1874, aged 83 years, 2 months, and 10 days (WCHS Book #18, p.92).

BEAGLE, Mary

No information exists regarding a Mary Beagle in Westchester County during the 1840s. She may be Mary Bedell, who is listed as an 84-year-old resident of the Town of Cortlandt, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. A Mary Bedell who died on April 18, 1869, at the age of 90 is buried in the East-Yard Cemetery in Yorktown, New York (WCHS Book #44, Section 2, p.4).

BEARMOORE, ____ (Madam)

John Macdonald did not provide the first name of Madam Bearmore but noted that her father was a cousin of Loyalist Major Mansfield Bearmore. She may be Elizabeth Bearmore, who is listed as a 60-year-old resident of the Town of Cortlandt, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. Madam Bearmore was interviewed on October 21, 1847. Thomas as Currie (Curry), the only other person interviewed that day, was also a resident of Cortlandt.

BEARMOORE, Gilbert

Gilbert Bearmore is listed as a 67-year-old shoemaker in the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. The tombstone of “Gilbert Barmore” in White Plains Rural Cemetery in White Plains, New York, indicates that he died on August 23, 1854, in his 71st year (WCHS Book #38, p.6).

BELCHER, ____ (Mrs. Elisha)

BELCHER, Lydia

Lydia Reynolds Belcher was a daughter of Horton Reynolds, whose home in Greenwich, Connecticut, was raided by Refugee cavalry commanded by Major Thomas Huggeford while it was serving as headquarters of Colonel Levi Wells of the Connecticut Militia. BELL, Thaddeus

John Macdonald indicated that Thaddeus Bell was 89 years old at the time of his interview on November 3, 1847. He is listed as a 91-year-old farmer in the Town of Darien, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. BERRIAN, Nicholas

Nicholas Berrian’s tombstone in Berrian Cemetery in Bronx, New York, indicated that he died on March 3, 1844, aged 76 years, 6 months and 8 days (WCHS Book #80, p.38). The tombstone no longer exists, as the remains in the Berrian Cemetery were moved to Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.

BROWN, David

John Macdonald indicated that David Brown was 86 years at the time of his interview on December 5, 1848. He is listed as an 89-year-old farmer in the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, New York, indicates that he was born on February 8, 1762, and died on September 7, 1850 (WCHS Book #15, p.31; #33, p.22).

BROWN, Major

Major was not a military rank, but rather the first name of interviewee Major Brown. BROWN, Merritt

Merritt Brown was the brother of interviewee Nehemiah Brown. He told John Macdonald that he was born in 1768. He is listed as an 82-year-old resident of the Town of Rye, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. BROWN, Nehemiah

Two men named Nehemiah Brown were residing in Rye, New York, when John Macdonald was conducting his interviews: Nehemiah Brown (1766-1847), a son of Samuel Brown and Amy Merritt, and Nehemiah Brown (1775-1855), a son of Nathaniel Brown. It appears that Nehemiah Brown (1766-1847) was the only person by that name who was interviewed by John Macdonald. He was a brother of interviewee Merritt Brown. His tombstone in the Brown Family Burial Ground in Port Chester, New York, indicates that he died on December 4, 1847, aged 81 years, 10 months, and 11 days (WCHS Book #15, p.59; Book #17, p.82). BRUNDAGE, Silas

Silas Brundage is listed as a 52-year-old carpenter in the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Anderson Cemetery in Greenwich indicates that he died on August 4, 1866, aged 71 years, 7 months, and 24 days (WCHS Book #17, p.85).

BRUSH, Benjamin in

BUCKOUT, ____ (Mr.)

John Macdonald did not provide the first name of Mr. Buckout, whom he indicated was a resident of Morrisania. He may be Jacob Buckout who is listed as a 65-year-old farmer in the Town of West Farms, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. (Morrisania was part of the Town of West Farms from 1846-1855.) A petition for probate for Jacob Buckout of West Farms was filed with the Westchester County Surrogate’s Court on May 12, 1865 (Westchester County Wills Liber 50, p.392).

BUCKLEY, Joseph

Joseph Buckley was a resident of Greenfield Hill in the Town of Fairfield, Connecticut.

CAMERON, ____ (Mr.)

John Macdonald did not provide the first name of Mr. Cameron. As Macdonald was conducting interviews in Norwalk and Westport, Connecticut, on September 10, 1846, the day of Mr. Cameron’s interview, he was likely a resident of one of those two towns.

CARPENTER, Elizabeth Field

Elizabeth Field Carpenter was the wife of interviewee John Carpenter. She is listed as a 78-year-old resident of the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. Her tombstone in the Purchase Friends Meeting House Cemetery in Purchase, New York, indicates that she died on January 8, 1864, aged 82 years, 1 month, and 26 days (WCHS Book #85, p.21).

CARPENTER, James

The James Carpenter who told John Macdonald to visit the graves of Thomas and Charity Huggeford in the Halsted Family Burial Ground in Purchase, New York, is likely one of two adult men named James Carpenter listed as residents of the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. James Carpenter, who is listed as a 86year-old farmer, and James Carpenter who is listed as a 57-year-old blacksmith.

CARPENTER, John

John Carpenter was the husband of interviewee Elizabeth Field Carpenter. He tells John Macdonald that he was born in 1769. He is listed as an 81-year-old farmer in the Town of Harrison, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Purchase Friends Meeting House Cemetery in Purchase, New York, indicates that he died on September 18, 1851, aged 82 years and 4 months (WCHS Book #85, p.21).

CARPENTER, Joshua

Joshua Carpenter is listed as a 63-year-old farmer in the Town of Yorktown, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Amawalk Friends Meeting House Cemetery in Yorktown indicates that he died on May 13, 1873, aged 85 years and 11 months (WCHS Book #46, Section 2, p.5).

CARPENTER, Jotham Jotham Carpenter told John Macdonald that he was 85 years old at the time of his interview on October 30, 1848. He is listed as an 87-year-old resident of the Town of North Castle, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the Carpenter-Rundle Family Burial Ground in North Castle indicates that he died on March 27, 1852, aged 89 years and 7 months (WCHS Book #21, p.1).

CHADEAYNE, Samuel Samuel Chadeayne is listed as an 80-year-old resident of the Town or Yorktown, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. A petition for probate for Samuel Chadeayne was filed with the Westchester County Surrogate’s Court on June 12, 1854 (Westchester County Wills Liber 35, p. 386).

CHATTERTON, Stephen Stephen Chatterton’s tombstone in the Greenville Reformed Church Cemetery in Greenburgh, New York, indicates that he died on February 5, 1850, aged 71 years, 11 months, and 29 days (WCHS Book 17, p.22).

CHICHESTER, Henry / Harry Henry Chichester was occasionally referred to as “Harry Chichester.” His tombstone in Pine Island Cemetery in Norwalk, Connecticut, indicates that he died on September 25, 1849, aged 87 years. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/70603061/henry-chichester

CHURCHILL, ____ (Mrs.) John Macdonald did not provide Mrs. Churchill’s first name but indicates that her maiden name was Taylor and that she resided near Hart’s Corner (present-day Hartsdale, New York). In her interview, she mentioned that she was 15 or 16 years old in 1781.

CLARK, Moses Moses Clark told John Macdonald that he was born in 1763. He is listed as an 86-yearold farmer in the Town or Eastchester, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the First Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in New Rochelle, New York, indicates that he died on October 11, 1850, aged 87 years, 5 months, and 20 days (WCHS Book #18, p.117).

CLINTON, Alexander (Dr.) Dr. Alexander Clinton was a grandson of James Clinton (1736-1812), who served as a major general in the Continental Army, and a great-nephew of George Clinton (17391812), who served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army, Governor of New York, and Vice President of the United States. His tombstone in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn indicates that he was born on April 7, 1793, and died on February 16, 1878. See his obituary in The New York Herald, February 19, 1878.

CORSA, Andrew Andrew Corsa was selected by Cornelius Oakley and John Oakley to help guide the American and French forces during their reconnaissance into present-day Bronx County in July 1781. Because of this, he was considered by John Macdonald to be one of the Westchester Guides. He is listed as an 88-year-old farmer in the Town of West Farms, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in Saint John’s Cemetery in Yonkers, New York, indicates that he was born on November 21, 1852, aged 90 years, 9 months, and 29 days (WCHS Book #86, p.35). CORSA, Frederick Frederick’s surname is spelled Curser and Cursor in the Westchester County Land Records (Liber 28, p.182; 53, p.37; 62, p.456; 88, p.350 and 153; 337, p.447). He is listed as “Fredk Corsor,” a head of household in the Town of Westchester, New York, in the 1840 United States Census. The one free white male aged 80-89 in this household was presumably the interviewee.

She is listed as “Patty Couch,” an 89-year-old resident of the Town of Westport, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. COUTANT, Isaian Isaian Coutant was a brother or interviewee John Coutant. His tombstone in the Coutant Cemetery in New Rochelle, New York, indicates that he died on February 22, 1845, aged 89 years, 1 month, and 12 days (WCHA Book #17, p.79).

COUTANT, John John Coutant was a brother of interviewee John Coutant. His tombstone in the Coutant Cemetery in New Rochelle, New York, indicates that he was born on March 27, 1754, and died on March 25, 1850 (WCHS Book #17, p.79).

CREGIER, Augustus Augustus Cregier is listed as an 81-year-old farmer in the Town of Yonkers, New York, in the 1850 United States Census.

CURRIE, Thomas as Jr. Thomas Currie is likely Thomas Curry. He is listed as a 76-year-old farmer in the Town of Cortlandt, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt indicates that he was born on September 23, 1773, and died on October 7, 1862 (WCHS Book #28, p.60).

CURSER, Sarah Although John Macdonald indicated that Sarah’s surname was Corsa, it was actually spelled Curser. She is listed as “Sarah Curser,” an 88-year-old resident of the Town of Yonkers, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. CYPHER, Rachel Rachel Ecker Cypher is listed as “Rachel Cupher,” an 83-year-old resident of the Town of White Plains, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. DANIELS, Isaac Isaac Daniels told John Macdonald that he was 86 years old at the time of his interview on October 28, 1848. He is listed as a 92-year-old resident of the Town of Bedford, New York, in the 1850 United States Census.

DAVIS, ____ (Mr.) John Macdonald interviewed “Mr. Davis and others” on September 4, 1846. He did not provide the first name of Mr. Davis.

DAVIS, Abraham Abraham Davis was a son of David Davis (Davids) and Jane Hatfield, and was the husband of interviewee Zipporan Miller Davis. He told John Macdonald that he was 80 years old at the time of his interview on November 21, 1846. He is listed as an 84-yearold resident of the Town of White Plains, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in White Plains Rural Cemetery in White Plains indicates that he died on November 12, 1854, aged 89 years (WCHS Book #38, p.29). DAVIS, Harrison John Macdonald indicated that Harrison Davis resided in Old Well, the neighborhood now known as South Norwalk in Norwalk, Connecticut.

DAVIS, Isaac John Macdonald indicated that Isaac Davis was 78 years old at the time of his interview on November 23, 1849. He is listed as a 79-year-old resident of the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census.

DAVIS, Silas Silas Davis told John Macdonald that he was 78 years old at the time of his interview on October 21, 1850. He is listed as a 77-year-old miller in the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. DAVIS, Zipporan Zipporan Miller Davis was a daughter of Elijah Miller and Ann Fisher, and was the wife of interviewee Abraham Davis. She is listed as an 82-year-old resident of the Town of White Plains, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. DERBYSHIRE, William William Derbyshire told John Macdonald that he was born in 1770. He is listed as “William Doubshire,” an 82-year-old laborer in the Town of White Plains, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. Although Derbyshire told John Macdonald that he was born in White Plains, the census indicates that he was born in England.

DEVEAU, Daniel Daniel is listed as “Daniel Devoe,” a 63-year-old shoemaker in the Town of Yonkers, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. The tombstone of that Joseph Coles in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Yonkers indicates that he was born in 1787 and died in 1857 (WCHS Book #86, p. 35).

DEVOE, Hannah Hannah Devoe was the wife of interviewee Joshua Devoe. John Macdonald indicated that she turned 90 years old in May 1847. Her husband, Joshua Devoe, is listed as a head of household in the Town of Greenburgh, New York, in the 1840 United States Census. The one free white female aged 80-89 in this household was presumably the interviewee.

DICKMAN, Daniel Daniel Dickman is likely Daniel Dixeman, who is listed as an 89-year-old resident of the Town of Westport, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census.

DISBROW, Ebenezer Squire Ebenezer Squire Disbrow is listed as “Squire Disbrow,” a 75-year-old resident of the Town of Westport, Connecticut, in the 1850 United States Census. His tombstone in the White Plains Presbyterian Church Cemetery in White Plains, New York, indicates that he died on July 5, 1864, aged 83 years, 10 months, and 22 days (WCHS Book #6, p.12).

DYCKMAN, Jane Jane Dyckman is listed as a 60-year-old resident of the Town of Cortlandt, New York, in the 1850 United States Census. Her tombstone in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Montrose, Town of Cortlandt, indicates that she died on October 18, 1870, aged 87 years, 8 months, and 10 days (WCHS Book #28B, p.50).

DYCKMAN, Michael Michael Dyckman was a nephew of Westchester Guides Abraham “Brom” Dyckman and Michael Dyckman. He resided in the present Dyckman Farmhouse Museum in Manhattan. His tombstone in Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, New York, indicates that he died on November 24, 1854 (WCHS Book #40, p.43).
