Mr. John James Lambert: The British,
on the 28th of April, 1777, were civil but hungry, asking
for bread. Mother happened to be baking and gave
them all she had. They baked more, which was
taken by the rear guard. I asked again when the
Americans came hungry, and she fed them. Col. Heard said he kept the British dragon officer
off by swinging his sword behind him.

The British encampment at Ridgefield
was half or three quarters of a mile from the
village on an elevated plain or ridge of land
on the east of and adjacent to the Norwalk
