I have been aware of this project for some time and agree that it would be appropriate to memorialize Peterson in some way during the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Revolutionary War. My concern is that honoring Peterson alone would be a disservice to two more important local heroes who served during the war—Pierre and Philip Van Cortlandt. Attached is my counter-proposal for a monument to all three men. I should point out that Pierre and Philip were originally buried in Croton in a family cemetery once located along Croton Point Avenue. In 1907, when the Van Cortlandt family sold their farm to Wood, Harmon & Co. to create the Harmon development, the Van Cortlandt graves were moved to Hillside Cemetery in Cortlandt Manor. I think the most appropriate location for this plaque is on the village-owned property in the area of the Veteran’s Corners monument.
