Request for Funding for Residential Food Scrap Program Promotion Event To promote and expand Croton’s successful residential food scrap recycling program, $500 is requested to cover cost of 12 cubic yards of finished compost, to be paid to Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) via SMM invoice to the Village after the event. Similar events have been successfully held in partnership with SMM in Ossining, Scarsdale, Bronxville, Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Philipstown, and Pound Ridge. By providing residents with compost made from their own scraps to use in their gardens and yards, and educating the community on the benefits of composting, we can underscore the Village’s commitment to sustainability. This initiative seeks to encourage sustainable practices among residents while fostering a greener and more environmentally conscious community. We believe that hosting this event will contribute to the expanded visibility and enthusiasm for our residential composting program. Event Details: Date: June 8, 2024 (rain date June 22) • Time: 10am - 1pm • Venue: train station parking lot A by the food scrap shed and drop-off site • Activity: Bring Your Own Bucket Compost Pickup Party! • The compost will be furnished by Sustainable Material Management of Cortlandt Manor, which processes our village scraps into compost. • The compost will be delivered by SMM truck and poured onto a 15’ x 15’ tarp to be provided by Keiko Niccolini. She will remove it after the event’s completion. • The event will be open to current program participants as well as other community members. We will promote the event via direct outreach to program participants, community social media. • SMM will deliver 12 cubic yards (about 2400 gallons, roughly one parking space) of compost, staged on a tarp for easy delivery, pick up and clean up. SMM’s truck will arrive on the morning of the event. • Keiko Niccolini (food scrap program manager), assisted by Marcus DaSilva (scrap site manager), will oversee all aspects of the event including delivery, distribution, on-site education and site cleanup. She will bring shovels for participants to use when filling buckets. • Distribution volume will be limited to 10 gallons per person. Leftover compost will be picked up by SMM. Values of the event: • Encourages sustainable practices: Composting reduces waste sent to incineration and promotes soil health and foster a sense of environmental stewardship. • Community engagement: The event provides an opportunity for residents to directly enjoy the benefits of the program by accessing finished compost made from the village food scrap collection. • Program promotion: By showcasing the effectiveness and ease of our composting program, we aim to increase participation and support from the community. • Demonstrates community support: Financial support from the Village Board underscores the importance of sustainable initiatives and publicly reinforces our commitment to environmental conservation.
