The Village Board of Trustees is considering the transfer of the authority to issue special 
permits to the Village Planning Board. Presently, most special permits are issued by the 
Village Board of Trustees, with the Village Zoning Board of Appeals having authority to grant 
special permits for freestanding signs and certain parking regulations. The uses which 
currently require special permits are expansive and vary by zoning district. The goal of this 
transfer is to streamline the approval process for applications, which currently must 
appear ﬁrst before the Village Board of Trustees for special permit approval and then 
proceed to the Village Planning Board for site plan approval.
