Proposal to Install a Peace Pole in Croton-on-Hudson​ Submitted to the Village Trustees of Croton-on-Hudson by the Croton on Hudson Arts & Humanities Advisory Council Introduction​ We respectfully propose the installation of a Peace Pole—a globally recognized symbol of hope and unity—in the Village of Croton-on-Hudson. Peace Poles bear the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages and serve as silent yet powerful reminders of our shared commitment to peace, inclusion, and community well-being. Background​ Originating from the World Peace Prayer Society in Japan in 1955, Peace Poles have been installed in over 180 countries, at sites ranging from schools and parks to the United Nations Headquarters. They transcend political and religious boundaries, promoting reflection, mutual understanding, and solidarity. Proposed Locations​ We have identified three potential sites in Croton-on-Hudson that would serve as fitting and visible homes for a Peace Pole: 1.​ Primary Choice: Senasqua Park by the pavillion A few yards away from the pavilion, this beloved park has a spot perfect for a Peace Pole that is peaceful and will act as a relaxing beacon for both park visitors and boaters. A place of contemplation with benches nearby 2.​ Secondary Choice: Croton Landing Park. A highly walked space in Croton Landing Park along the waterfront. The peace pole would go near a bench offering a space for peaceful reflection. Also viewable from boats. 3. Third Choice: 5 Corners A highly trafficked area, the Peace Pole could go near the bench and the bus stop. Has a view of the cemetery and the Veteran Memorial. Installation Details ●​ The Peace Pole would be approximately 6 feet tall, made of weather-resistant material, and inscribed with “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in 8 languages reflecting the diversity of Croton’s community. ●​ Funding for the pole is secured through the Arts and Humanities budget. ●​ We are happy to work with the Village to follow any required processes and to coordinate with DPW or Parks staff. Benefits to the Community ●​ Reinforces Croton’s values of inclusivity, compassion, and civic unity. ●​ Enhances the visual and symbolic landscape of a central public space. ●​ Serves as a site for contemplation, education, and community celebration. Timeline ●​ Order will happen after approval ●​ Peace Pole takes appx 2 weeks for shipping ●​ Installation takes about 1 hour ●​ Peace Pole Dedication Ceremony approximately 1 month after approval Conclusion​ We hope the Trustees will support this gesture of goodwill by approving the installation of a Peace Pole at one of the proposed locations. It will stand as a long-lasting symbol of Croton’s commitment to peace both locally and globally. Thank you for your consideration.
