1130-E WITHHOLDING OF CONSENT FOR STUDENT TO APPEAR IN SCHOOL DISTRICT MEDIA RELEASES AND MEDIA The Croton-Harmon School District is frequently covered by the media, including newspapers and magazines as well as television, radio and electronic media. In addition, the District publicizes and celebrates student activities and achievements in publications such as newsletters, on the District website, and through the District’s social media sites. Photographs and/or videos may be taken by school employees or by other individuals at the request of the District. Unless consent is specifically withheld by the parent/guardian (or student age 18 or older or who is an emancipated minor), a student may be covered and reported on by the District and outside media. A parent/guardian may withhold permission to have a student under age 18 photographed, videotaped or audiotaped during school-sponsored activities, learning experiences, and/or events that are not open to the general public or to be interviewed or have their work displayed. Students age 18 and above and emancipated minors may withhold such permission on their own. If permission is withheld, the District will undertake reasonable and appropriate efforts to see that the student is not included in photographs, audio or video recordings, where the student is individually identified, to have their work displayed, or to be interviewed, by the media, in publicity by the District, or in publicity by PTAs and school support organizations of activities during the school day whether on or off school premises. This does not include group photographs or audio or video recordings in which students appear as a group and are not individually identified. Also, this does not include videotaping and audiotaping by security cameras in school or on school buses. Photographs of students are published in memory books/yearbooks. A parent/guardian (or student age 18 or above or an emancipated minor) may withhold consent for the student’s photograph to appear in a memory books/yearbooks. If consent is withheld, the District will undertake reasonable efforts to see that the student is not included in photographs in those publications. If you desire to DENY permission for your child (or yourself if age 18 or above or an emancipated minor) to appear in photographs, videos, or audio recordings, or to be interviewed or have the student’s work displayed, please complete and sign the Withholding of Consent form and submit it to the Building Principal of the student’s school. A separate form must be completed for each student. If submitted by a parent/guardian, this Withholding of Consent will remain in effect for the duration of the student’s education within the District or until the student attains age 18. The Withholding of Consent can be revoked by providing a written notice to the Principal of the school currently attended by the student. This withholding of consent is separate from withholding of consent for the District to use or disseminate directory information under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
