A revised draft, marked as based on public feedback, of proposed changes to the Village zoning code's farm-animal provisions that would prohibit keeping farm animals except chickens or ducks. Chickens and ducks, excluding roosters, would be allowed in numbers tied to lot size and could not be penned or housed within 25 feet of any lot line in the R-5 and RB one-family residence zoning districts, or 50 feet in all others. Birds would have to be kept in an enclosure or fenced area at all times, maintained clean, dry and odor-free, with adequate ventilation, sun and shade, and protection from pests and predators.

Proposed Revisions to Farm Animals Regulations Based on Public Feedback (All Changes in Red) DOMESTIC ANIMALS – Any companion animal or pet, including any cat, dog, fish, rabbit, or reptile, normally maintained in or near the household of the owner or person who cares for such animal. A domestic animal shall not include any farm animals as defined hereunder. FARM ANIMALS - Animals customarily raised on a farm for agricultural purposes including, but not limited to, fowl, horses, cows, goats, sheep, pigs and donkeys. FOWL Any poultry or domesticated game bird, including but not limited to chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, pheasants, peacocks, quail and grouse more than nine months old. Poultry or game birds under nine months old shall not be counted but may not exceed the number of fowl permitted. § 230-9.1 (A)(11)(g) Keeping domestic animals as pets shall be permitted, and no domestic animals, except dogs or cats, shall be penned or housed within 15 feet of any lot line. § 230-9.1 (A)(11)(h) Keeping of farm animals is prohibited except for the keeping of chickens or ducks. [1] The keeping of chickens or ducks, excluding roosters, shall be permitted based on the ratio noted in the table below, and no chickens or ducks shall be penned or housed within 25 feet of any lot line for properties within the R-5 and RB: One-family residence zoning districts, and 50 feet for all other properties. Lot Size Maximum Number of Chickens & Ducks Permitted Less than ¼ acre Larger than ¼ acre but less than ½ acre Larger than ½ acre but less than 1 acre More than 1 acre [2] Chickens and ducks must be kept in an enclosure or fenced area at all times. [3] Enclosures must be clean, dry, and odor-free, kept in a neat and sanitary condition at all times, in a manner that will not disturb the use or enjoyment of neighboring lots due to noise, odor or other adverse impact. [4] Enclosures must provide adequate ventilation and adequate sun and shade, as well as protection from pests and predators.
