To: From: Date: July 29, 2022 Re: Merwin Oak Update I wanted to provide an update to the Village Board regarding the efforts that have been undertaken since my last memo of July 1, 2022. The Village DPW has been working with our tree contractor, Golden’s Tree Service, to create an action plan for saving as much of the lumber from the Merwin Oak for future uses. This plan calls for saving some slices of the tree trunk for display at the Croton Historical Society, as well as a monument to the tree. Additionally, slabs will be cut from the lumber for use in creating benches. While the exact location of the benches has yet to be determined, one location we are considering is Veterans Corner, which currently does not have any benches for passive reflection. Finally, DPW has been collaborating with the Croton Girl Scouts in the planting of a new tree in the park. After walking the area, it was decided that the best location for a new tree is in the same area where the Merwin Oak stood. It will be the same kind of tree (swamp oak) and a large caliper. We are looking to plant the tree in late August or early September as the weather allows. Please let me know if you have any questions.
