The first independent election for officers of this town took place in 17S3.

At a town meeting, held the 22d of December, 1723, at the house of Gilbert Brush, innkeeper, for choosing town officers for the town of New Rochelle, in pursuance of an ordinance of the Council, appointed by the act of the Legislature, entitled an act to provide for the temporary government of the Bouihern part of this state whenever tlie enemy shall abandon or be dispossest of the same, and until the Legislature can be convened, passed 23d of October, 1779, the following town officers are elected : --
