It was probably thrown up by the small body of Militia who had occupied that position, as a guard of the Stores which had been accumulated at that place, while the main Army occupied the Heights of Harlem ; but the subsequent occupation of the ground, which has been do.scribed in the text, by the main Army, was followed by the construction of a line of works, on the high ground, on the rear of that temporarj' line, the last-named of which was abandoned on Saturday, the twenty -sixth of October.*
