October 18th. Mrs. Thomas Ferris of North Castle: I am a native of Middle Patent, where I lived during the Revolutionary War, and married, near its close, Mr. Thomas Ferris. I think it was a part of DeLancey's party that fired Bedford from their conduct as they attacked Mr . . . . . Miller of that place, re- -fusing him quarter and hacking him to pieces with their swords --

upon that occasion they burnt the houses of the warm Whigs on the road as they went up, vizt, Peter Lyons, &c. They drove off a good many cattle and on their return intended to burn Middle Patent, but the bridge over Mahann's river was taken up and they (were unwilling to) would not ford it. A party of DeLancey's afterwards came to Middle Patent and drove off the cattle, commanded I think by Major Huggeford. I think the capture of DeLancey's horse by Tim Knapp was the same affair in which my husband was concerned. I saw the horse at Greenwich, Connecticut after he was taken. He was sold for a large sum to an American officer and the money shared among the captors. Several were concerned in the enterprize. Tim

Knapp was the handsomest young man I ever saw. Mr. Ferris went down to Throg's Neck with Captain Jonathan James Sackett and Jedediah Owen to capture some British officers there (Captain Simcoes?). They went out in the night to drink at a well near his [X] mother's house where they were seen by one of her black men who betrayed him to the enemy - Kinne- -cutt then lived there and was their friend. He came to them and told them their situation.
