November 14th. Calvin Mead, of Quaker Ridge: "Tarleton in 1779 endeavored to surprise Colonel White near Roundhill but failed, White having shifted his Head quarters the night before. When Tarleton retired White sent Lieut. Gill with a party of fifteen or twenty to insult the British colonel and provoke a pursuit to a place where the American Colonel had a strong party of infantry in ambush. The British did pursue, but Gills party took the wrong road being warmly pressed. This was between Quaker Hill Ridge and White Plains. When Gill was ambuscaded by Beck- -with he encouraged his men to cut through telling them their horses were better and stronger. Kipp at first tried to talk Mosier and his men into a surrender, promising good treatment. &c.
