October 17th. Genl. Nathaniel Mon- -tross aged seventy eight: "When Tarleton came out to Crompond in 1779, he crossed the Croton at Cudney's ford two and a half miles above Pines Bridge. He then went about two miles on the Somers road where they took Captain Teller whose company was at Crompond that day on duty, and who had been home that night on a visit to his wife. They then proceeded to pro- -ceed to Crompond with Teller riding in front to deceive the Americans. When they approached the enemy at Crompond his (Teller's) men said: "Who are those coming? the Crompond road at Delavan's (now called Hallecks) Mills. Captain Samuel Delavan owned Hallecks Mills and lived directly opposite the mill which is very near the Crompond road.
