1844. Septr. 5th Mrs. Webb (born Pell): Joshua Pell (grandfather of Joshua L. Pell of New York) was the principal guide that piloted the British army from Pell's Point to the heights of Pelham. The battle was fought on the east side of the road leading to the point and not far from the present Post road - (three hundred yards?) The old road from the point crossed what now forms the present Post road, and running by the south side of our house joined the old Boston Post road. Obs. On the morning of the 18th of Octr. 1776, the American brigade under Colonel Glover would seem to have been encamped on the first high ridge between East Chester village and the Bronx from which he marched to oppose the British army, passing along or near the old road and close to the present residence of Mr. Hay.
