Lithograph by G. Hayward showing water cascading over the Old Croton Dam spillway, drawn for D.T. Valentine. The Old Croton Dam (1837-1842) was an engineering marvel — a masonry gravity dam 50 feet high and 270 feet long, creating a reservoir that supplied all of New York City's water.
