High Bridge, New York — Henry Ward Ranger (1905)

Oil on canvas by Henry Ward Ranger (1858-1916) depicting the High Bridge carrying the Croton Aqueduct over the Harlem River. The oldest standing bridge in New York City, High Bridge was the engineering showpiece of the Croton water system. Its Roman-style stone arches, deliberately designed to evoke classical aqueducts, made it one of the most painted landmarks in 19th-century New York.
