View of the Jet at Harlem River — F.B. Tower (1843)

Tower's plate showing a jet of Croton water at the Harlem River. Engineers tested the system by sending water through at pressure before the official opening. The sight of clean water jetting high into the air was a sensation — a preview of the 50-foot fountain that would erupt at City Hall Park on October 14, 1842.
