To: From: Date: March 12, 2026 Re: Proposed Signage Law I have been working with the Village Attorney for the past few months to revise the Village’s signage law in accordance with the directive given by the Village Board last year. The proposed local law that has been drafted consists of a substantial rewrite of the existing code provisions governing signs. The proposed local law clearly delineates the regulations that concern commercial and noncommercial signage. Generally speaking, noncommercial signage is not governed except for size, placement and attachment. This is in accordance with guidance received from the New York Conference of Mayors (NYCOM) and court decisions regarding the First Amendment rights of individuals. For sign applications that are part of a Planning Board application (either site plan or change-of-use), the applicant will no longer have to appear before the Visual Environment Board in addition to the Planning Board. This will help to streamline applications and matches other procedures where the Planning Board is handling the application (e.g., a site plan application that also has a wetlands permit application does not need to appear before the Water Control Commission).
