Regional Director, Region 8 New York State Dept. of Transportation 4 Burnett Boulevard Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603 Dear Ms. Fuda: I am writing to implore the New York State Dept. of Transportation to take immediate action regarding the tree canopy along NY Route 129 between East Mount Airy Road, in the Town of Cortlandt, and Harrison Street, in the Village of Croton-on-Hudson. Over the past two months, at least five trees have fallen across the roadway, blocking this arterial route between Croton-on- Hudson and the eastern part of Westchester County. On July 21, 2026, a large tree limb fell within the Town of Cortlandt that landed on a motor vehicle. Thankfully, the operator of the vehicle was uninjured. However, it could have very easily ended tragically. My office has previously contacted Region 8 about the condition of the trees along Route 129 but has not seen any action taken. These trees are within the state right-of-way and it is my understanding that it is the state’s duty to address them (see Informal Opinion No. 85-40, New York State Attorney General). I urge you to address this situation immediately before a real tragedy occurs.
